This spring, Dobbs Ferry created its first-ever girls flag football team. Coached by Vincent Garofalo, they have recorded wins against Byram Hills (13-12), Hudson River (43-13), and Irvington (12-10) thus far, showing heart and determination in each game. Their win against the Hudson River was especially one-sided, with the Eagles piling on the scoring. Their season also included close games like the two-point victory over Irvington, which had spectators on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, it has not been all wins for the Eagles as they also played against some better and more experienced teams. They lost to Briarcliff, Mamaroneck, Bronxville, Eastchester, Ardsley, and Putnam Valley. Even in the losses, though, the players tried their best, supporting each other and getting better with each game on the field. Captain Ella Moon played a large role in helping guide the squad through its inaugural season.
This season was about more than the scoreboards and records. It was about creating something new and breaking through barriers. Each snap, catch, and flag pulled all added up to be something that felt bigger than the sport of football itself. The Dobbs Ferry girls’ flag football team is blazing the trail up ahead for young girls in the community, and the program itself is only just getting started.
