Now that winter sports are coming to a close and spring is around the corner, it is time to reflect on the amazing season of the Dobbs Ferry Girls Basketball team. The team made it all the way to the section championship game in the county center but unfortunately fell just short against YMA.
The Dobbs Ferry Eagles finished with a record of 13-7 in Section 1 Class B. The season started off a little rocky with the girls having a record of 5-5 just ten games into the season. Slowly but surely though, the girls found their rhythm. They only lost two more games before playoffs, going on a dominant unbeaten run lasting 7 straight games. With this momentum, the girls had an assertive win in the first round of playoffs, beating Woodlands 59-35. In the semi-finals, the team faced off against Blind Brook. The first half was a competitive game, with Blind Brook just barely leading at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, Blind Brook took control and got a lead of 8 points. Dobbs Ferry needed to rally and they did, with senior captain Ella Moon leading the charge. She had 4 blazing 3-pointers and scored a whopping 18 of her 26 points in the 4th quarter alone. Ultimately, these heroics led the Eagles to victory, edging out a 63-58 win against the Trojans.
In the finals, Dobbs played number first-seeded YMA. Slowly but surely YMA ran away with the game. Some questionable officiating from the refs and high percentage free throw shooting from YMA proved to be too much for the Eagles (not to be confused with the YMA Lady Eagles). The final score of the game was 56-45.
Star forward of the season, Samira Phillips had this to say about the season as a whole: “From the beginning of this season everyone had the goal of getting to the county center and playing for the gold ball. Our coach was really confident in us this year because of the teams that were in our class this year and the strong players we had on the team.” Phillips recognized the early slump during the beginning of the season but said that “as we played more games and played with each other more, we became the team that our coach always thought we could be.” The season was also very historic as the girls have only won the gold ball once in school history. Phillips also stated that “it was the first time in over a decade that the girls team played at the championship so just that was a big accomplishment.”
While the last game might not have gone their way, this season as a whole meant a lot to the organization and they will certainly strive for more in the future. Congratulations to the Eagles and seniors Ella Moon, Abby Dann, Alexa Vicchio, and Kim Gregorio on a great season!
