Lunar New Year celebrates the beginning of a new year according to the lunar calendar, and this year it fell on January 29th. It is observed widely throughout the globe by Asian countries and communities and is celebrated through festivals, family traditions, spiritual practices, and more. Traditions vary between countries, cultures, and families; but many spend time with family or friends, exchanging well wishes for a lucky new year. Those who celebrate the lunar new year may also gather in community events to celebrate.
For those who observe the zodiac calendar, this year is the year of the Snake. Westchester hosted several incredible celebrations to honor the occasion. One memorable celebration was a festival held in Irvington on 1 Bridge Street Hosted by New Kawaii, a small business game store, the festival consisted of games, art, and activities to celebrate, and had events for all ages. As a small business, New Kawaii also supported other small businesses and local artisans with their “Artists Alley”, which allowed visitors to admire and shop the work of local artists. Other activities included drop-in crafts centered around the theme of the year of the snake, games based on Pokemon, Avatar and the like, live music, access to their library of games, and more.
Another celebration was held at the Hudson River Museum located in Yonkers, on the first of February. This event provided arts, crafts, performances, and demonstrations that were available for all ages to participate. These included a ceremonial lion dance, classical Chinese dances, Indonesian gamelan music, a tai chi demonstration, and a sogo-chum performance. Attendees also had the opportunity to be taught origami patterns, and learn calligraphy and knitting from experts at the festival.
