Dobbs Ferry High School offers a wide range of clubs for students to participate in. Of these clubs, some organize and participate in activities that contribute to the well-being of the community. Three of these clubs that do so include the Hands In Club, the Ecology Club, and Youth to Youth Club (Y2Y).
The Hands In Community Service Club is led by student presidents Isla Baird, Lily Williams-Ameen, Maya Solis, Melanie Miadelets, and Ella Moon. The goal of this club is to encourage students to get involved with the community and to help out through events such as fundraisers and other activities. Last year, the Hands In Club ran numerous fundraisers, including a book drive, which focused on collecting donations to be given to the Dobbs Ferry Public Library. They also volunteered for important organizations, such as the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry, Cabrini Nursing Home, and the Be A Friend Project. So far this year, the club has held a campus clean-up, in which students picked up trash around school grounds to maintain a clean campus. Currently, they are raising money for the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry Thanksgiving Pie Drive, and aim to continue volunteering and raising money for different causes. This club provides wonderful opportunities for students to volunteer and serve their community, and to make an impact on not only the town of Dobbs Ferry but others elsewhere.
The Ecology Club, led by student presidents Aribel Lozano and Jaron Soboroff, operates with the intent of raising awareness on ecology-related topics and making positive differences within the community. Last school year, the club led several school campus cleanups. This is an event where club members and others who are interested get-together and pick up trash, keeping the grounds clean of waste and materials that are harmful to the environment. Through fundraisers such as sticker and bake sales, the club has also been able to donate to the “One Tree Planted” foundation, and has even planted two trees of their own on campus! The two apple trees, located at the front of the school, provide a source of food for bees and a wide variety of other creatures. The club was also successful in promoting awareness for Conservation Day, which included a fundraiser and ecology-related videos and lessons that were shown to classes during school. This year, the club hopes to once again celebrate Conservation Day with the school, and continue to hold fundraisers and activities to promote awareness and help the ecosystem thrive!
Finally, the Youth to Youth Club (Y2Y), run by student presidents Dana Toth and Tessa Hunt, strives to spread awareness about the multitude of issues teenagers may face – both physical and mental. Topics such as substance use or the importance of mental health are laid out to students by the club via information stands and posters in the hallways. The stands have interactive ways to learn and encourage peers to gain insight on how to make smarter decisions. This year, the club ran a table at the annual Ferry Festa, where they provided resources/information to raise awareness on substance use/abuse and other topics. This year, the club aims to continue spreading awareness and information to the school through a PSA video and larger events held after school
These clubs are an incredible example of how the students of Dobbs Ferry High School are taking action to serve and assist their school, and community, and the remarkable impact these clubs have!
